How can I keep my story private?

Transcript

[Narrator] How can I keep my story private?

[Rachael, lawyer] Your Story Disability Legal Support is a free and independent legal service.

We give advice to anybody who wants to share their story with the Disability Royal Commission.

[Narrator] Can I keep my story private?

[Rachael, lawyer] Yes, you can keep your story private.

You could ask the Royal Commission to keep your submission confidential, and if you ask that, they will keep it confidential, and will resist any attempt by anybody else to access it.

New protections that have recently been passed, mean that your story stays private, even after the Royal Commission is over.

[Narrator] How else can I keep my story private?

[Rachael, lawyer] Another way you can keep your story private is by registering to attend a private session. Not everyone who registers to attend is accepted.

However, it is a criminal offence for anyone to disclose or use information that you share in a private session.

Also, anything you share is private and remains so for 99 years.

If you are worried about privacy and you want to talk more about these options, then this is something that Your Story Disability Legal Support can do, and we encourage you to contact us to talk through these options.

[Narrator] How can I find out more information?
