If you need legal advice, we can arrange for you to talk to one of our lawyers.
You may need legal advice if:
- you want to name a person or organisation in your submission
- there are restrictions on sharing your story with the Royal Commission, for example a confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement
- you are worried about the impact of sharing your story on you (or someone else’s) safety, access to services, employment or rights.
Getting legal advice
Getting legal advice with our service doesn’t mean you are in trouble.
Waiting for legal advice to engage with the Royal Commission can be frustrating. We will contact you as soon as we can to give you advice.
You can get legal advice in a way that works for you:
- over the phone
- by skype or videoconference
- face-to-face
We can arrange interpreters to support you during the legal appointment. This includes Auslan.
You can invite your advocate, family member or friend to support you during the legal appointment.
What happens at the legal advice session?
The lawyer will listen to your story, talk to you about your legal rights and your options to share your story with the Disability Royal Commission. This may include by:
- making a submission
- giving evidence at a public hearing
- sharing information about your experiences at a private session
We will set a time to give you legal advice. If you need more time we will make another appointment with you.
